        MPI Predicting Early Distant Recurrence

Study distant recurrence data on 195 mastectomy patients with ductal ca. NOS 1980-1983 (ages 29-87, mean 60, median 60; 13-57 months of follow up)
(all treated by modified radical mastectomy...those with central or medial primaries or with positive nodes also getting radiation; prospective study & 7 different persons calculated MPI; tumor size range 0.4-15 cm., median 2 cm.)
The single best parameter at predicting:

Distant recurrence status of cases (n=195)

number "yes"

number "no" total cases
MPI < 0.60 10 (8%) 112 (92%) 122
MPI > 0.60 27 (37%) 46 (63%) 73
ALNN 15 (13%) 104 (87%) 119
ALNP 22 (29%) 54 (71%) 76
Tumor size < 2 cm. 13 (13%) 91 (87%) 104
Tumor size > 2cm. 24 (26%) 67 (74%) 91
MAI < 9 10 (9%) 101 (81%) 111
MAI >9 27 (32%) 57 (68%) 84
MPI plus node status refines further:

MPI

ALN
status

Distant recurrence status of cases (n=195)

yes no total
< 0.60 ALNN 8 91 (92%) 99
< 0.60 ALNP 2 (9%) 21 23
> = 0.60 ALNN 7 (54%) 13 20
> = 0.60 ALNP 20 33 (63%) 53
